だんだん暑くなって、着るものが少なくなり、身が軽くなると
何か忘れ物をしたような気持ちになることがあります。
それにしても植物の成長の速さには驚かされます。
タケノコは、かわいい頭をちょこんと出していると思っていると、もう人間の大人のような背丈に。
そして次の週には、もう青い空に向かって立派な竹になっています。
身に着けていた竹の皮をすごい勢いで脱ぎ捨て、土の中の養分をたっぷり吸って、
まっしぐらに成長する姿には元気をもらいます。

タイは農業王国ですから、豊作を占うとても重要な儀式があります。
タイのカレンダーで6ヶ月目（だいたい5月にあたります）に行われます。
スコータイ王朝から700年も続く伝統です。
その年の収穫の良しあしとお米を植えはじめる季節の吉兆を占います。
近頃は、バンコクにある王宮そばのサナームルアン公園で開かれます。
今年は、5月13日に王族のマハー・ワチラーロンコーンが執り行いました。
儀式のハイライトは、彼が差し出された3種類の布の中から、到来する季節の雨量を占うことです。
短い布ならば、雨はたくさん降ります。2番目に短い布ならば平均的な雨量で、最も長い布ならば雨不足の年になるでしょう。今年、神主は短い布を選びました。
それが終わると、2頭の神聖な牡牛に、お米、豆、とうもろこし、ほし草、ゴマ、水、酒の7種類の食べ物と
飲み物が差しだされます。今回、牡牛は干し草と水とゴマを選びました。
今年は、十分な水とたくさんの食べ物に恵まれるということです。
儀式が終わると、富と幸運を願って、神主が農民たちに種を振り掛けます。
農民たちは、その種を自分たちの種米と混ぜ、豊作を祈りつつ今年の植え付けを始めます。
効率の良い技術が発展した今では、この占いはナンセンスにも見えます。
でもこの儀式を見ると、私は自分たちの国がどれだけ広大で肥沃な大地に恵まれているかに気づくのです。
As Thailand is an agricultural country, we have an important ceremony called The Royal Ploughing Ceremony. This ceremony has been held in the 6th month in Thai calendar (normally it is in May.) for more than 700 years since Sukhothai Kingdom. The first purpose is a performing for harvest encouragement and the second one is the royal ploughing ceremony marking the auspicious beginning of the rice growing season.
Nowadays it is held at Sanam Luang near the Grand Palace in Bangkok. This year Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has presided over the ceremony on May 13th. The highlight of ceremony is the amount of forecast rainfall in the coming season. The Ploughing Lord is offered a choice of three lengths of cloth, if his choice is the longest one there will be little rain during the coming year: if it is the shortest one, rain will be plentiful while the one of medium length indicates average rain. This year he picked up the shortest one.
When the ploughing is finished the bulls are presented with seven different foods and drink, i.e. rice seed, beans, maize, hays, sesame seed, water and alcoholic liquor. This year the bulls choose hays, water and sesame seed so it’s forecasted that there will be enough water and plentiful foods.
After the ceremony has ended, farmers get the seeds sown by the Ploughing Lord for their wealth and good luck. They will mix the seeds with their own rice to ensure a good crop in the coming year.
Even we have good technology for efficient agriculture now and the forecast seems to be nonsense for some people but this ceremony always remind me how plentiful our land has been..........
